The year 2024 marks the centenary of the death of Giacomo Puccini. A great admirer of Giuseppe Verdi, whose modernity he praised, Puccini differed from his contemporaries both aesthetically and dramaturgically. Breaking away from the subjects of grand opera in favour of the fate of ordinary people, whom he preferred to ancient heroes, gods and sovereigns, Puccini was always keen to evoke, in his own words, “the great pain in small souls”. It is in this spirit that tenor Jonas Kaufmann pays tribute to the composer, performing some of the most beautiful pages of Puccini’s repertoire, from La Bohème, Tosca and Madame Butterfly. Accompanied by the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, conducted by Jochen Rieder, Jonas Kaufmann shares the stage with soprano Valeria Sepe in this recital entitled Viva Puccini!
