Thirty years on, this English pianist with an XXL musical culture has presented one of the most popular TV and music shows on the BBC in his native country: Later… With Jools Holland. He has accompanied countless legends with his famous Rhythm & Blues Orchestra. Just a few names? Sting, Amy Winehouse, Norah Jones, Joe Strummer, Chrissie Hynde, Mark Knopfler, Jeff Beck, Bryan Ferry, Robert Plant, Marianne Faithfull, George Benson, George Harrison and Jamiroquai. Not bad for someone who made his first appearance on record with a band called Les Chaises Électriques, on a track entitled… Fuck Off!
Rest assured: since then, Jools Holland has worked with B.B. King, Tom Jones, David Gilmour, Solomon Burke and Joe Bonamassa, and signed several memorable albums with his orchestra. One of the most successful? Sex & Jazz & Rock & Roll. So it goes without saying that this charismatic leader, whose elegant style is always tinged with British humor, never sees rhythm & blues, jazz and soul music as anything other than festive and generous.
