Barrie Kosky

Biography

Barrie Kosky is the General Manager and Artistic Director of Komische Oper Berlin, where his work has included The Magic Flute (co-directed with 1927), which has been seen by over a quarter of a million people in three continents.  As a director he is in constant demand in international opera houses such as Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, Bayreuth Festival, Salzburg Festival, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Teatro Real Madrid, Oper Frankfurt, Opera de Paris, The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the English National Opera London, Opernhaus Zürich, Dutch National Opera, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and the Wiener Staatsoper. He was Artistic Co-Director of Schauspielhaus Wien from 2001-2005 and the Artistic Director of The Adelaide Festivals in 1996.

He has been awarded countless accolades including the Laurence Olivier Award for Castor et Pollux (2011), Director of the Year (2014) and Ensemble of the Year (2015) for the International Opera Awards, for Openwelt he has won Opera House of the Year (2012), Director of the Year (2016) and Production of the year for Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at The Bayreuth Festival (2018), The Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Opera and Music Theatre for Saul (2016) (also nominated for a 2016 International Opera Award) and in 2017 his production of Saul won six out of seven categories at the Helpmann Awards, including Best Opera and Best Opera Direction, winning the same awards in 2019 for his production of The Magic Flute.
