To stage a forest, to bestow it with elements of naturalism so as to better bring out its symbolic power; to show, without giving explanations, the slide, always possible, from order and harmony towards disorder and chaos; to spell out the thin and disturbing articulation between civilization and savagery, these are the lofty aims of Gisèle Vienne’s play This is how you will disappear. A dream landscape inhabited by three dancer-actors, model-dolls, layers of sound and mist and… a falcon. A show with the allure of a contemporary myth bringing spectators as close as possible to their unsettled emotions.
This is how you will disappear was premiered in 2010 at the Festival d’Avignon and has since been performed in Europe and Japan. Of Franco-Austrian origin, Gisèle Vienne is a singular artist who, over the past several years, has developed an exciting corpus of work influenced by her training in music and philosophy, and using choreography, theatre, puppetry and photography. She has devised about fifteen works in multiple forms, most of them with artists with whom she collaborates regularly, such as the writer Dennis Cooper, musicians Peter Rehberg and Stephen O’Malley and lighting designer Patrick Riou.
