Do we have a place on this Earth, we who have so much trouble taking care of her? Are we capable of being more attentive to the Earth, rather than simply taking up space? Through his staging, Philippe Quesne asks us questions. He explores the link between Man and Nature, in the light of its vulnerabilities and possibilities, and shares with us his thoughts on the Anthropocene. “Everything is now thematic, even the accompaniments, and we are moving towards Schönberg’s ‘total thematism’,” notes Henri-Louis de La Grange about this Song of the Earth (1908) in which Gustav Mahler manages to unify lieder and symphony, the two genres to which he devoted his life. Ill and inconsolable over the death of his eldest daughter, Mahler entrusted his score to his disciple Bruno Walter, who conducted it for the first time in 1911, six months after the composer’s death.
